This can perhaps be viewed as, as Aamir Khan ...DW,

This can perhaps be viewed as, as Aamir Khan pointed out, another form of lobbying -- lobbying by the people. After all the govt does not seem to take action without being under pressure, and to create the necessary pressure a critical mass of people is needed.

In my view there is space and need of both revolution and evolution, of the nor'westers and also of the steady and constant drips of monsoon. When the anomaly in the system is too stubborn, a great force is needed to dislodge the status quo. But as with storms and gusty winds, many ills also take place in any revolutionary process, which need further corrections immediately after. Already we are hearing various voices on the issue (from Aruna Roy, CVC, even CBI) that were otherwise silent earlier or not getting attention. That is where Anna’s agitation has succeeded in the short run. About intellectuals, my view is very pessimistic. They have always failed the people of this country.Shoumitrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03732831879909912613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2099403334217518060.post-63389321339198411692011-09-11T19:24:53.197+05:302011-09-11T19:24:53.197+05:30The way this govt has conducted itself, i doubt th...The way this govt has conducted itself, i doubt there's anyone who supports it in this fracas. But, frankly, this 'movement' just didn't capture my imagination - dont even want to tick off points on why/how. Probably, i would've had more sympathy if less people had been invlved. And, this didnt end with the medieval ages. It is true that doing business in india is very tough... as swapan says: "Indian entrepreneurs had two options: to either play the game by rules set by venal politicians or opt out."
About the conduct of journalists, my my main grudge is against their being partisan, being close to political parties (perhaps in exchange of personal favours)and thus losing their independence. This results in us readers getting contorted news.Shoumitrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03732831879909912613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2099403334217518060.post-19609351242919036252010-12-03T10:03:50.504+05:302010-12-03T10:03:50.504+05:30S,

At his Dhaka ashram, taking the cover of dark nights, nearby Muslim Fakirs/Pirs used to visit him, to discuss their spiritual problems, sometimes even to borrow aasana (the tools and practices in all religions are almost similar -- chanting, meditation, use of incense, sitting on a sacred aasana during practice, etc). They were scared of persecution at the hands of maulavis if the latter came to know of it. Historically, priests have been more powerful than the real practitioners within the faith and the latter victimised, ofetn killed. True we can see some dargahs of famous saints but that is only because those saints were, to our luck, protected by the then rulers who showed courage to stand up against the maulavis. Where was Hindu fundamentalist forces then?
.... About Advani, probably he is the most misunderstood and underrated politicians of our times, other than P V Narasimha Rao. Bothe re related to the Babri Masjid. That saga demands a complete, different blog -- sometimes later, may be. My first priority is to jot down what I have percieved as the fundamental defects within the other great religions, one by one. :)Shoumitrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06304050599384263322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2099403334217518060.post-14020499863776439002009-08-08T13:24:25.445+05:302009-08-08T13:24:25.445+05:30u make a v.pertinnet observation about islam not a...u make a v.pertinnet observation about islam not according respect to its saints/pirs.
i will share smthng interesting with u. HT has an excellent blog space where their journos write on a host of topics. 1 such blog is maintained by a chap called zia-ul-haq who, going by his writing, is an educated, free thinking, liberatarian. however, all his posts r directed at explaining away the acts of massacre or violence that islam has become synonimous with today. in the comment space, i have locked horns with him coz he says muslims feel threatened by hindu fundamentalism. i agree. nonetheless, ppl like him never stop to question the reason y a peace loving, docile race like ours could embrace a leader like advani. they are so busy painting the world in their own colors & nurturing imagined hurts, that others' preferences, religions, have no meaning at all.drift woodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01347336756998447009noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2099403334217518060.post-9487207753778782902009-07-06T21:53:07.054+05:302009-07-06T21:53:07.054+05:30ok, i get your point. why is it that more people c...ok, i get your point. why is it that more people cannot argue or reason the way u do? its so refreshing coming across a blogger like u!drift woodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01347336756998447009noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2099403334217518060.post-36208674398218441762009-07-06T15:29:50.115+05:302009-07-06T15:29:50.115+05:30DW, I am aware how the Tamils have always been dis...DW, I am aware how the Tamils have always been discriminated in Srilanka, and being a Bengali from Assam where the situation is somewhat similar, I also know how it feels to be discriminated against. However, after leading his people to a very just uprising (and up to this point he is my hero too), he turned into a complete autocrat (as it happens with almost all revolutionaries); he silenced (thru assassination, pure and simple) all other Tamil Rights groups (TULF, etc), recruited children and girls for his army and controlled them thru brutal force. The Srilankan Govt had made some very good offers for talks at various points of time, but he never accepted. He rather used these periods for regrouping. He was not amenable to any settlement that would have fallen short of his own goals. He was, in his final years, like a rogue elephant whom either you put down or get yourself killed. I am optimistic that Rajapakse will deliver now, because firstly he has vanquished his only obstacle, and secondly, he has got the goodwill of the Sinhalese population on his side that will allow him to be generous towards the Tamils. But let’s keep our fingers crossed till we see him actually doing these things (granting the Tamils equal rights, opportunities, benefits, and perhaps some sort of autonomy). Here India has a role to play -- should keep some sort of behind-the-scene pressure on the Srilanka Govt.Shoumitrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06304050599384263322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2099403334217518060.post-84938310735018987472009-07-06T13:53:00.940+05:302009-07-06T13:53:00.940+05:30i loved what u wrote in the last para.
